2004年に劇場公開された映画『STEAMBOY(スチームボーイ)』は、大友克洋が原案・脚本・監督を務めた『AKIRA』以来の長編アニメ作品です。本作の絵コンテを全2巻にまとめた『Animation STEAMBOY Storyboards 1』は、第1巻として発売されました。この絵コンテ集は、映画公開当時からレアアイテムとして知られていた『スチームボーイ絵コンテ集』を2分冊化し、大友全集サイズに復刻したものです。A、B、Cパートの全編に加え、初公開となる「絵コンテの下描き」が収録されており、約500ページの大ボリュームとなっています。大友克洋の絵コンテは緻密で情報量が多く、単体でも作品としての価値があります。本書は『STEAMBOY』の構造を解き明かす資料であり、紙の本で読むもう一つの『STEAMBOY』とも言えます。

Released in 2004, the film ‘STEAMBOY’ is a long-awaited animated feature directed by Katsuhiro Otomo since ‘AKIRA’. ‘Animation STEAMBOY Storyboards 1’ compiles the storyboard of the film into two volumes, with this being the first volume. This collection reissues the rare ‘STEAMBOY Storyboard Collection’ previously published as a hardcover book, now expanded into two volumes and reformatted to Otomo’s complete works size. It includes the full A, B, and C parts, along with previously unreleased ‘rough drafts’ of the storyboards, totaling around 500 pages. Otomo’s storyboards are detailed and rich in information, offering value as standalone works. This book not only reveals the structure of ‘STEAMBOY’ but also serves as another version of the film in print form.
